The Ronald McDonald House in Gainesville: A Welcoming Space for Our Wig Fittings
November 1, 2024, was a warm and sunny day in Orlando – perfect for the drive to Gainesville to meet three young patients and provide them with custom-designed wigs. We arrived at the Ronald McDonald House, a place of comfort and support, where we had previously fitted Phoebe, our very first wig recipient, back in May.
Returning to Ronald McDonald House was like coming home. The facility's director, Lindsey Bull, was thrilled to host us once again, warmly welcoming our team and providing a safe and inviting space for the day’s wig fittings. Inside, as the young patients awaited their appointments with our talented wigmaker Katia, they were welcomed into a comfortable setting with cozy seating, a charming patio, and plenty of snacks and drinks.
Transforming Lives with Custom Wigs: Nicky’s Story of Joy and Confidence
First to be fitted was Nicky, a soft-spoken young girl whose excitement showed in her radiant smile. When she stepped into the "wig wagon" with Katia, none of us could have anticipated how quickly her transformation would unfold. Katia, always innovating, had prepared Nicky’s wig based on photos provided in advance, allowing for quick styling rather than full assembly on-site. When Nicky emerged, the wig perfectly in place, her joy was infectious. This time-saving adjustment opens the door for us to serve more patients with ease, enhancing our ability to make an impact through the Wigs for Comfort and Confidence program.
Restoring Confidence for Kids Battling Cancer: Aubrielle’s Custom Wig Journey
Next, we met with Aubrielle, another shy yet sweet young girl who had recently undergone hair loss and had been eagerly awaiting her new wig. Her mother shared how much this day meant to Aubrielle, who had long dreamed of having her new look restored. With photos and a description provided ahead of time, Katia had created a wig that looked just as Aubrielle imagined. After a few small adjustments to keep the hair from falling into her eyes, Aubrielle looked at herself with newfound confidence. She joyfully posed for photos and left with her mother, ready to celebrate with a special lunch at Steak and Shake, her spirit bright and lifted.
Meeting Special Requests: Claire’s Custom Wig Fitting at Shands Children's Hospital
Our final fitting of the day took place in the hospital room of Claire, an inpatient at Shands. Claire had requested a unique wig with a “wolf cut” style, complete with bold red and blue stripes. The joy in her eyes when she saw her custom wig was palpable. Her vibrant personality shone through as she chatted eagerly during the fitting, delighted by how perfectly Katia had captured her vision. As Claire and her mother admired the final look, we shared wig care products and took a few photos, savoring the heartwarming connection that forms when confidence and joy are restored.
By 3:00 p.m., all three patients had received their beautiful, high-quality wigs, each a testament to the commitment and compassion that fuels the For Nina Foundation. These young patients now have the opportunity to face their treatments with a renewed sense of comfort, identity, and courage – inspired by Nina’s legacy and made possible by the generosity of our supporters.
